Clay Science at the Museum – Fall 2018
Explore the Science while you create with clay! Science topics include: simple machines, study of minerals and chemical structure of clay, porosity, sintering, temper, and more! Exploration of Museum Exhibits rounds out these series classes.
 
Session I – Inventions with Clay

Mondays Aug 27 - Oct 1 (6 consecutive Mondays)

Learn about the plastic nature of clay as you build your own ideas with it.

$75 ($67.50 members) $10 suggested supply fee on donation basis, payable to Instructor

Session II – Geology of Clay

Mondays Oct 8 - Nov 12 (6 consecutive Mondays)
How is the ceramic creating process like the rock cycle?

Session III - From Ground to Fire

Saturdays Nov 17 - Dec 15 (5 consecutive Saturdays)
Dig clay from the ground from nearby collecting sites, process and create with it, then fire with wood in a pit.

$62.50 ($56.25 member) $10 suggested supply fee on donation basis, payable to Instructor

Geology and Clay

 

Take a hike in the Sandia’s and learn about its geology. Create slab construction with clay, paint with mineral oxides, and learn about the geological formation of clay. A short guided hike will occur before creating art. Conveniently scheduled before fall break for students in APS and Rio Rancho and aligned with the Balloon Fiesta schedule.
